Williams have stuck to form throughout testing so far, adopting a low profile and completing a programme free of headline making glory runs. However, Valtteri Bottas topped today’s timesheet as the team recorded qualifying simulation runs, on what was the Finn’s final day in the car before the season-opener in Melbourne.
Here are five things we learnt on day two of the second test.
The second and final pre-season test in Barcelona commenced today and it was a familiar face at the top of the timesheet. Nico Rosberg managed 82 laps this morning before handing driving duties over to his teammate, and sat on top spot throughout with impressive times on both the medium and soft compound Pirelli’s. For the first time this pre-season, Ferrari and Williams looked adrift of the Mercedes on pace.

The final chequered flag has fallen on the first pre-season test, with Ferrari topping the timesheet for the third time this week. Kimi Raikkonen managed 80 laps in the SF16-H today, with a 1:23.477 recorded on a ultrasoft run. While the Finn’s benchmark was a full eight tenths clear of Daniil Kvyat’s time for Red Bull, it was half a second adrift of Sebastian Vettel’s equivalent run on Tuesday – which has remained the fastest time set during the entire test.

The plot thickened on day three in Barcelona as surprising names appeared at the top of the timesheet. Nico Hulkenberg put Force India on top with an impressive time on the supersoft tyre just three tenths short of Vettel’s ultrasoft benchmark posted yesterday. Meanwhile, Haas cemented what has been a very positive start to life in the sport by finishing the day second.

The second day in Barcelona was largely a case of status quo at the top of the timesheet. Sebastian Vettel made it a brace of table topping days for Ferrari, with a run on the brand new ultra-soft tyre. Mercedes, however, were once again supreme in the mileage stakes, with a record 172 laps and finishing fourth on the timesheet after a run on the medium compound.

Engines fired into life at 9am this morning, at the Circuit de Barcelona, as the first green flag of 2016 marked the start of pre-season testing. For the team widely regarded as the likely title protagonists – Mercedes and Ferrari – day one provided plenty of positives. Sebastian Vettel topped the timesheet while it was Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton who completed a marathon 155 laps.

Following another 117 laps recorded by Nico Rosberg in this week’s in-season test at Spielberg, the German has surpassed the 1000 test lap mark for 2015. Meanwhile, teammate and championship rival Lewis Hamilton continues to lag behind in the mileage stakes and given the intensity of the title fight, each and every advantage, regardless of the scale, could potentially prove pivotal in the final assessment.
